Sigma Nu - Delta Iota

In this edition of the Nu’s Flash, Beta Tau has several huge accomplishments and stories to announce:

 

To begin with, Sigma Nu and sorority Delta Gamma WON FIRST PLACE OVERALL in NCSU’s Homecoming 2010: No Wake Zone! In only their second year together, the pair came out in force and participated all week in numerous attendance-based campus events. The duo improved on their third place finish from last year, trumping the incumbent Student Wolfpack Club by a small margin. This victory will not only add another accomplishment to the chapter’s already long list, but it will also put the chapter into contention for NCSU’s Fraternity of the Year Award in 2011.  Beta Tau would like to thank the ladies of Delta Gamma and Homecoming Chairman Taylor Moseley for their hard work and dedication throughout this huge undertaking.

 

 

In other news, Beta Tau would like to congratulate all of the newly-elected executive officers including: Taylor Moseley (Eminent Commander), Philip Misklow (Lieutenant Commander), Luke Pyle (Treasurer), Chris Allen (Recorder), Christopher Brenton (Recruitment Chairman), and Elias Ballew (Candidate Marshal). The newly-elected and re-elected brothers will lead Beta Tau into what hopefully will be the most successful and productive year in chapter history.

 

In addition to the new officers, Beta Tau will also be congratulating and welcoming eleven new brothers into the chapter this Sunday, November 14^th. The men will complete their candidacy and become full-fledged Knights. A majority of the chapter and several alumni are planning to attend a day that marks the beginning of a new chapter in Beta Tau history. After the ceremony, everybody is welcome to come celebrate at the Carolina Ale House in Cary.

 

Lastly, the brothers of Sigma Nu held a semi-formal last Thursday, November 4^th at Rum Runners in downtown Raleigh. Everyone stayed safe and had a great time. Beta Tau would like to thank Social Chairman Brian Cerrito for orchestrating such a fun and successful event.

The men of the Delta Iota chapter of Sigma Nu Fraternity at WSU volunteered for Habitat for Humanity in Palouse to help build a home for a family in need on Saturday.

The house is still in the process of being built for a single mother and her two children.

“We helped this family with a brand-new, very strong house,” Sigma Nu President Andrew Card said. “It makes us feel good, and we hope others see that giving back to the community is a great thing to do. With the amount of men we saw show up, I know we’ll make an impact in our community.” The men worked from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. They spent time roofing the house, building a fence and helping with interior work such as finishing walls and laying trusses. There is a full structured-skeleton of the house.

“This was a good start for us, especially since our fraternity has only been together about a month,” said Danny Chau, historian and petitioner for Sigma Nu. “We don’t plan on stopping community service once we reach our requirements. We want to keep at it and help out our community in anyway we can. I hope we can set an example for not only the Greek community but our community as a whole.” The Delta Iota chapter was shut down in 2007 after allegations of hazing in the house. Chau said that just this year, new members along with initiated members from another chapter have been trying to reinstate the charter and become a positive member in WSU’s Greek community.

Sigma Nu Fraternity has four national philanthropies: Habitat for Humanity, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Character Counts! and the College Charity Bowl Foundation. The chapter also plans on fundraising in the spring for these philanthropies.

“Making an impact is what motivates us and drives us to continue working hard and helping in any way we can,” said Bryan Blackburn, Sigma Nu community service and philanthropy chairman. “Knowing that you have made a difference in someone’s life is the best feeling in the world, incomparable to any other experience.” The men have also participated in other philanthropies including Alpha Chi Omega’s Battle of the Bands. Sigma Nu won first place in this philanthropy out of six fraternities. Battle of the Bands raised $500, and the money went to Alternatives to Domestic Violence on the Palouse.

“We felt it was a huge accomplishment for our group because we are new on campus and have really been trying to make our fraternity the best around,” Blackburn said. “It was a great start.”

Two years after its charter was revoked, the Delta Iota chapter of Sigma Nu at WSU is trying to reinstate its chapter.

“Sigma Nu is looking to, again, become a positive member of the WSU Greek community and wants to be an agent to continue the fraternal values movement,” said Joshua Green, the expansion and recruitment consultant for Sigma Nu Fraternity Headquarters. 

Sigma Nu was closed down in 2007 after allegations were made by freshmen that hazing took place at the house.

The university told Sigma Nu fraternity members on May 5, 2007, that their chapter had been suspended following an extensive investigation launched in 2006.

The investigation began after an anonymous letter accused the WSU fraternity of hazing its members. During the investigation, the university found pictures on Facebook that showed Sigma Nu freshmen with drawings on their faces. Former members of Sigma Nu said the freshmen admitted doing the drawings to each other.

Hazing is illegal, according to Washington state law.

Years later, Sigma Nu nationals is looking to recolonize with a fresh slate.

“Men that join will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create an organization from the ground up,” Green said. “They can expect to get involved on campus, gain valuable leadership skills and training and develop themselves personally and professionally.” According to a news release, Sigma Nu hopes to find young men to re-establish the chapter with a positive reputation on campus.

“As part of the Sigma Nu expansions program, I am working to build a ‘Rock Chapter’ on the WSU campus,” Green said. “The Rock Award is given out to Sigma Nu chapters that excel in all levels of fraternity.” The men of the chapter will do community service projects and take part in leadership workshops and a leadership development program, he said.

“Some traits that we pride ourselves in at Sigma Nu are leadership and brotherhood,” said Stefan Lungren, a sophomore-initiated member. “Brotherhood will be achieved with activities such as bowling, retreats, basketball tournaments, brotherhood dinners and weekly meetings.” According to the Sigma Nu Web site, the fraternity was founded under the principles of love, honor and truth.

“We are looking for men who are willing to carry out these values, not just through WSU or Sigma Nu, but for the rest of their lives,” said Andrew Card, a junior-initiated member.

In the early 2000s, the Sigma Nu chapter house had a multimillion dollar renovation after a fire. It is currently being rented to a faith-based group. If Sigma Nu regains its chapter, it could move back into the house by next fall, Green said.

“(It) is called the ‘Nu House,’” Card said. “The house has been remodeled, and the owner, Jim Stevens, wanted to make this house the best living facility on campus.
